APPG for Entrepreneurship: Sharing Economy

The Sharing Economy is a large and growing part of the UK economy. It has many advantages – including reducing waste, community building and increasing productivity – but sharing economy entrepreneurs and policy makers face a number of challenges that we will explore in this virtual roundtable.

This is a pivotal time for the sector; with the Treasury considering the VAT treatment of the Sharing Economy; the aftermath of significant legal judgments on the employment status of workers, and the need for more employment opportunities to boost the economic recovery from COVID-19.
We are aiming for around 24 people, so there will be plenty of opportunity to speak. It will be a mix of MPs, Peers, entrepreneurs and policy experts.

The Sharing Economy is a new theme for the APPG and at this roundtable you will have an opportunity to shape the scope of the project. Your thoughts at the roundtable will feed into the questions of a Call for Evidence which we’ll run past you before publishing. The Call for Evidence will be followed by a Briefing Paper and Launch, which we will make sure to invite you to.

The webinar will cover four main areas:

  • Startups: What are the key regulatory hurdles? How important is the challenge of uncertainty for new entrants?

  • Tax: How can we ensure a level playing field that doesn’t bias against digital platforms?

  • Employment status: How can we best balance protection, flexibility and innovation?

  • Sharing Economy Ecosystem: What are the UK’s strengths? What are the other challenges not discussed (e.g. funding, talent)?
